The 40-minute film covers the basics--the matriarchal social structure, the intense and lifelong emotional ties, the appalling history of abuse--with energy and clarity, making for a concise overview and a convincing call to action.

While the docu would have benefited from being fleshed out beyond its 40-minute running time, as is, it’s still an effective calling card for the animal-rights agenda.

As difficult as some of the imagery in the film is, it's impossible to look away and maybe just as impossible not to learn something about elephants and about ourselves.
