Love ‘em or hate ‘em–if you’re a football fan, you’ve got strong opinions on the Dallas Cowboys, and America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys is a sharp, swaggering story of their finest era.
-
The eight-episode series tells a deftly constructed story, of a cocky Arkansas oilman’s contentious purchase of a storied but struggling franchise, the team’s 1990s dominance, and its subsequent decline (on the field, anyway; off the field the Cowboys are the most valuable team in the NFL, worth an estimated $12.8 billion).

“America’s Team” works best as players like Aikman, Kelly, Rice, Young, Smith, and Irvin break down key moments in these historic match-ups. Eschewing a dull ESPN Classic approach that skips the details, the Ways get their interview subjects to really break down what happened both on and off the field in those key seasons. It’s a bit ironic that the most interesting chunks of “America’s Team” occur when Jones is pushed to the side.

I doubt there will be much interest in all eight episodes beyond the Cowboys faithful and those so hungry for the return of football that they’ll hop in a time machine and relive the team’s glory days whether they like the team or not.
