I can see why some people find this show funny. The over the top politically incorrect mother speaking her mind on social and family issues can sometimes hit its mark. When a joke doesn't hit though, which is far too often, the excessive vulgarity of the show comes to light and it's clear that this is a crutch to get laughs. When a joke doesn't hit though, which is far too often, the excessive vulgarity of the show comes to light and it's clear that this is a crutch to get laughs. This wouldn't be a problem if there was something deeper behind show, but sadly there is not. It simultaneously claims to satirize the rich housewife lifestyle by pointing out its absurdity through crass situations and statements yet also glorifies the extravagant lifestyle of the lead family. At the end of the episode we are left laughing at the ridiculousness of the lead character. Overly obsessed with her looks, social status, past popularity in high school and other trivial things, she is lazy, stupid and a bad mom despite her thinking the contrary. In a show entitled American Mom, it's odd that it asks the audience to laugh at the Mom to say how useless she is. Expand

Mixon’s casting would have been much more meaningful had her show more frequently let her form speak for itself. American Housewife’s star, so far, is Katie’s weight--and a number is a pretty boring premise for a story.

Katy Mixon is a star. It’s honestly her intense likability that makes this show so watchable, for of all of the non-fat joke-related mistakes it makes (chiefly its Alex P. Keaton knockoff older son character).

[Katy Mixo's] talent may be the key to buying this new comedy some patience with the audience as it figures out what it wants to be.
