This year it appears the creators, writers, and even actors have gone back to what made this TV show so great and that is the character development and a sense of building a story with mystery with some good scares. As I was watching the first episode I was taken back to the first season a bit by the situation the couple found themselves in and by them moving into a new place. It seems similar to Murder house, but also felt comparable to movies like The Strangers, or Straw Dogs. I love the location and the theme so far and I can't wait to see where they are going to go this season! Expand

Like the previous years, this show lacks sense over some parts and feels very weird in others. Overall I believe that this season is trying to be different and make audience's wishes come true. We can't tell from only the first episode wheter the goals will be achieved, only time will tell. For now, let's hope they don't mess it up ..

I just watched the first chapter and I enjoyed it! I don't know why it's getting hate. It is something different from the previous seasons, and those terrorists got me doubting. I can't wait til next week to watch the following episode.

A decent first episode. Full disclosure--I've only watched two full seasons--the first two. Made it halfway through the other ones, and thought they all sucked. This is a really uneven show--but I keep coming back to it because the actors are top notch, and I keep hoping everything might come together one of these days.

Great horror, and good story telling, W2G. It doesn't come much better than this in a TV series, well at least these first 3 episodes have had me on edge.

I have liked the interviews for what they have added another layer onto this story, although at the same time with any kind of retelling there is always a sense of expectancy possibly in becoming a shame, that the outcome isn't a mist..

I'm positive that true horror fans will love this season. The first episode was better that all horror movies I've seen during the last 5 years!! I loved the overall theme and the new perspective the directors have taken, and the actors did a pretty good job so far. Definitely recommend

Easily the best season of AHS. Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr. are clearly good pair as seen on OJ Simpson. And Lady Gaga and Kathy Bates have done it again.

Who could have imagined it was possible to create a new subgenre best described as “a thinking man’s horror”? Seems like an oxymoron, right? But I believe Ryan Murphy’s AHS: Roanoke easily fits this classification and is also a dose of old-school, unrelenting horror that can leave you breathless. Integral to the tale is a reflection on the complexities generated by modern media culture and it is seamlessly blended with the adrenaline rush of grizzly murder, monsters, blood, and torture. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the weakest season of American Horror Story. It's also the shortest, sitting at only ten episodes.

The basic plot follows the lost colony of Roanoke. Kind of. It's shot in a really weird way, using found footage, news segments and reality TV style interviews for the duration of the ten episodes. It's gory, even by AHS standards. Probably the most gory season yet. However, the characters don't hold up very well. None of them are really likable. Sarah Paulson who plays Audrey Tindell which is the actress that plays the reenactment for Shelby Miller (yes, its confusing but it makes sense when you watch the show.) Her british accent, IMO, was terrible.

It's probably the weirdest of the series. And there is a nice tie in to Asylum at the end.

Roanoke and is by far the most brutal, violent, disturbing and terrifying American Horror Story installment yet. It's filled with graphic imagery, an intriguing story and an interesting structure which is the perfect recipe for a narrative that will haunt you long after the show is over.

Let's be honest. AHS had some troubles in the past years. Coven, Freak Show and Hotel were messy, unorganised, uninteresting, and sometimes plain disappointing. And while Roanoke was not perfect, it brought back - at least partially - the core of the show: pure horror.

As producers often pointed out the season was divided into three parts:
    - the first one, documentary/reenactment type, was just fine and quite original. It lacked some suspense because we knew who would make it out alive
    - the second one, a live reality show, was brilliant. Typical and a good - kind cliche horror - people trapped in a cursed house. While our characters died one by one, character development unwound simultaneously. We did not get all the answers though. But that does not matter - that's ordinary for AHS and supernatural horror genre in general.
    - The third part, whatever that was, - was terrible. Season finale was probably the worst episode of the whole AHS franchise. Irrelevant, boring and depressing. The ending made even less sense. Just meaningless.

If it wasn't for the acclaimed cast (Paulson, Basset, O'Hare, Peters, Porter, Rabe, Conroy, Bates ...) this would be just an average horror series. But with good storytelling and amazing actors AHS managed to deliver a solid season.

American Horror Story: Roanoke had me on the edge of my seat, period. The finale felt a bit out of place but, still, offered all the thrills to make this incarnation one of the franchise's best.

My Roanoke Nightmare is a fascinating new direction in that mission. We’re not sure quite yet if we’re applauding the new direction; to be quite honest, we found the premiere to be so heavy on explanation that we were slightly bored.

None of it innovated on horror tradition--echoes of The Blair Witch Project, The Hills Have Eyes, and The Amityville Horror abounded--but the creep-outs were executed with careful timing and visual flair. The documentary aspect and the limited cast size thus far has also offered convincing, grounded characterization of the leads--and more importantly, characterization of their relationships.

A lot of this was great fun. ... The grace notes the show allowed itself--the witty depiction of Shelby as a bougie yoga lover who likes her evening glass of wine maybe a little too much, the unapologetic plot holes that garishly remind you that yes, this is a horror story--were actually allowed to resonate, rather than being muffled by too much too-muchness.
