This series began very well but by episodes 7 & 8 it had degenerated into torture porn. The scenes featuring the hillbilly cannibals were complete garbage of a kind not seen since the last "saw" movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've watched seasons 1-4 and loved them. I was most fond of season 3, and season 4 got a touch creepy for me but kept it interesting. I skipped season 5 altogether because I am NOT a Lady Gaga fan and had no desire to indulge in her attempt at acting. I have read I was not sorry I missed it. When season 6 did so well with their teaser trailers and adverts, I was intrigued to see what they had in store. A series of horror stories? Like maybe things told around a campfire...similar to the days of Crypt Keeper's Tales from the Crypt? I was excited because it was looking more and more like this is what they had in store. When episode 1 started, I was grabbed by the suspense and wanted to see more. By episode 6, I was happy with the ending and ready for a new story. When episode 7 started, I literally blurted out, "what in the holy f*** is this s***???!?" because it turned into a stupid reality show recap of the show that was enacted about a true false story by actors. Confused? Yeah...it gets worse. MUCH worse. Next thing you know, [SPOILER ALERT!!!!] everyone is dead, including the fake production team, the fake real actors of the real fake actors of the true fake story, and then a fake court hearing on the true fake story of Lee. Then another talk show that has one of the ladies that was a real fake actor on the re-enactment of the true fake story, but isn't actually her...instead she is now some big time talk show host getting a scoop on Lee's story. Then it turns into Lee finding out her daughter, Flora, is missing, and one of the crazy hillbilly's is shooting up the place with an assault rifle. But instead of Lee dying there, she gets to live on, because this f***ery of a mess isn't done playing itself out. No. Instead, hillbilly gets shot up by security, and Lee goes on back to the house to find her daughter. But not before bumping into the Spirit Chasers. Oh, FFS....you've GOT to be kidding me. NOW...we have ANOTHER fake reality show that is covering the true fake story of the real fake actors that died and the fake real actors that died too, and their spirits are there supposedly. In the end...everyone, again, dies. This time, Lee talks her daughter into living while Lee will let the little pilgrim ghost girl kill Lee so she can be her afterlife Mommy and protect her from the butcher. The end,

If you didn't follow a single bit of that BS...don't worry. It was hard, VERY hard, for my entire family to follow. It was such a tangled mess of WTF is going on NOW? That even my husband stood up in the middle of the show and said, "Ok. I'm done. This is just...yeah. Have fun." And he went to bed.

Seriously. Seriously......very deeply seriously disappointing. Ryan Murphy should have taken this roll of film out to the pasture and set it on fire. Wow.... If there's an AHS 7? I'm out. No way will I waste my time on that. They, apparently, ran out of juice for good material around season 4. *sigh*

This season was a loss! I hate reality tv. I watched the whole thing feeling obligated to. I was disappointed from the first episode and it only got worse with each new episode. Only positive thing is that its over. I hope they get back to making it great next season. Was one of my favorite shows. If next season is this bad, i will not waste my time watching.

I missed the sultry sexiness every other seasons has had. This was like a bad reality show. I know that was the point, but it didn't make it worth watching. The actors were great as usual, and the house was lovely, but it still seemed dull and lifeless. Maybe they were trying to cash in on the success of the OJ American Crime Story spin-off, which I haven't seen, because I don't like based-on-a-true-story re-enactments whether actually true or fictitious. I hope they go back to the old formula. The worst season of the first 5 was far better than Roanoke. Expand

At this point (episode 5?) I gotta admit that there are laughs aplenty to be had--from the general pretentiousness of the whole thing down to little 'acting' details (eg. Rabe's teary delivery.) The framing device continues to constipate the narrative flow, and what I assume are important lines of dialogue are often totally lost, either because of use of the various hokey accents or purely technical incompetence (yes, I mean you, Mr. Sound Engineer.) The gross-out factor seems to be getting more & more play as we go along, & I suppose that's not a bad thing compared to having to watch Matt, Shelby & Co. go their totally preposterous, helpless way (again and again!) or trying to take Kathy Bates seriously as she keeps topping her own over-the-top handling of 'The Butcher,' mouthing lines that she surely knows are laughable and in an accent that makes them doubly so. I suppose all the Evan Peters groupies are ecstatic now that he has finally arrived - something I'd welcome myself if he weren't so juvenile in a role that calls for greater maturity (the same problem he had in 'Hotel') and so summer-stock sounding with all that Brit overlay on his lines. As for Doris Kearns Goodwin, I never quite bought into her being 'rehabilitated' after the plagiarism scandal; and now I see that's she's really just a ho. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the weakest season of American Horror Story. It's also the shortest, sitting at only ten episodes.

The basic plot follows the lost colony of Roanoke. Kind of. It's shot in a really weird way, using found footage, news segments and reality TV style interviews for the duration of the ten episodes. It's gory, even by AHS standards. Probably the most gory season yet. However, the characters don't hold up very well. None of them are really likable. Sarah Paulson who plays Audrey Tindell which is the actress that plays the reenactment for Shelby Miller (yes, its confusing but it makes sense when you watch the show.) Her british accent, IMO, was terrible.

It's probably the weirdest of the series. And there is a nice tie in to Asylum at the end.

As producers often pointed out the season was divided into three parts:
    - the first one, documentary/reenactment type, was just fine and quite original. It lacked some suspense because we knew who would make it out alive
    - the second one, a live reality show, was brilliant. Typical and a good - kind cliche horror - people trapped in a cursed house. While our characters died one by one, character development unwound simultaneously. We did not get all the answers though. But that does not matter - that's ordinary for AHS and supernatural horror genre in general.
    - The third part, whatever that was, - was terrible. Season finale was probably the worst episode of the whole AHS franchise. Irrelevant, boring and depressing. The ending made even less sense. Just meaningless.

If it wasn't for the acclaimed cast (Paulson, Basset, O'Hare, Peters, Porter, Rabe, Conroy, Bates ...) this would be just an average horror series. But with good storytelling and amazing actors AHS managed to deliver a solid season.

Easily the best season of AHS behind Asylum, this was by far the closest to a "horror" story the series has been

This season really gave me hope that they were starting to turn this show around. It's not the best season but it's at least on par with some of the better ones. This season was bit too short, and lacked content. Cricket (Leslie Jordan) and his theatrics were great, and so was Audrey (Sarah Paulson) running around saying 'oh my god'. Edward Philippe Mott's (Evan Peters) character being fleshed out through a flashback episode was another strong point. Other then that, there just wan't enough to go off. My Roanoke Nightmare is a fascinating new direction in that mission. We’re not sure quite yet if we’re applauding the new direction; to be quite honest, we found the premiere to be so heavy on explanation that we were slightly bored.

None of it innovated on horror tradition--echoes of The Blair Witch Project, The Hills Have Eyes, and The Amityville Horror abounded--but the creep-outs were executed with careful timing and visual flair. The documentary aspect and the limited cast size thus far has also offered convincing, grounded characterization of the leads--and more importantly, characterization of their relationships.

A lot of this was great fun. ... The grace notes the show allowed itself--the witty depiction of Shelby as a bougie yoga lover who likes her evening glass of wine maybe a little too much, the unapologetic plot holes that garishly remind you that yes, this is a horror story--were actually allowed to resonate, rather than being muffled by too much too-muchness.
