    Sometimes the vulgarity verges on try-hard (“monkey-spunk” gets a mention), but part of the fun is wondering how much the real Elvis (who spent much of his career shunted into cheesy family-friendly films) would have approved.

    “Agent Elvis” succeeds more as a curiosity than a comedy, which is to say, I found it only occasionally funny — blood splatter doesn’t do it for me, I confess — but generally interesting, if only to see what scenes and references might turn up next. ... The series looks good, especially in its cartoonification of Elvis, all midcentury swooping lines and angles. (Robert Valley designed the character, and fashion designer John Varvatos received a screen credit for his wardrobe.) McConaughey’s performance, which is more McConaughey than Presley, is like honey on the ear.

    No matter how many stars you pack in, the amount of cool Easter eggs dropped into the series, and the most, coolest soundtrack from Presley’s nearly 25-year musical career juxtaposed to fiery action scenes that appeal to the TikTok generation, these elements are not enough to save the show’s uneven blend of silliness and satire.

    Agent Elvis falls short in providing consecutive laughs and original spy ideas that quickly wear out their welcome. While a talented voice cast led by an energetic McConaughey attempts to elevate the overall energy. it’s not enough to give a solid rubbernecking recommendation.

    As ideas go, though, this one feels too out-there for its own good. The streaming service couldn’t help falling in love with its potential and promotability, but not to be cruel, they probably should have labeled this pitch “Return to sender.”

    So pretend you are Lisa Marie Presley, have seen "Archer", got really high one night and then and think to yourself: "Hmmm, that Archer seriesSo pretend you are Lisa Marie Presley, have seen "Archer", got really high one night and then and think to yourself: "Hmmm, that Archer series is super fun. Wait, what if I put my dad in there, pitch this to Netflix and they pay some A-List voice talent - can I cash in big$ and make myself relevant somehow?" - What do you think would happen? Well, nothing good.

    It's a jumbled mess, pretending to have the same style as the Archer crew pulled off - but sans the humor... actually sans any detectable humor.

    It's neither a smart, nor a fun show - why the hell Elvis is in there outside of someone with the name "Presley" getting some dough, is beyond me. They could've put Joey Baloney in there and it would've probably been way more edgy.

    Netflix's decision to fund this mumbo jumbo is just one more reason to subscribe to your local library and read a good book, or either cut the NF sub to let them know they're on the way to quickly become a true trash streaming service canceling good shows in favor of things that make you say "Why did this happen?"    … Full Review »

    Very little to enjoy in the extremely linear plot and the dialogue is rambling and one note.
    There's almost nothing in the script that gives each character a unique voice and because of this there's no interplay and humour.
    Mike Arnold is the "Archer Writer" that the publicity makes such noise about. Unfortunately his involvement with Archer spans only a handful of episodes, after the show dropped off in quality in season 4, onwards, so perhaps not the stamp of quality the showrunners would like us to think.
    Conceptually interesting but unfortunately a sad indictment of how studios think they can churn out bland content that will be eaten up, simply because it has a few big names attached to it and bears a vague resemblance to something else that was once popular.
    It makes me wonder how many incredibly talented people with new and interesting concepts for shows were knocked back, simply because a spreadsheet suggested this bilge would work.    … Full Review »
