“Acapulco” boasts enough sharp characterizations to make its gentle screwball comedy ping pong around the hotel with effervescent ease.

It’s a well-balanced show with an endearing lead performance and a whole roster of equally charming supporting players, all of whom get standout moments or spotlight episodes.

The comedy could be sharper, though occasionally all the elements pop into place. ... But the emotional beats — particularly in separate subplots involving a painful secret of Don Pablo’s, and a delicate secret of Sara’s — land very well. On the whole, Acapulco feels like a satisfying enough scripted destination.

There’s room for most of the major characters, even the ones initially presented as villains, to attain a little nuance. And every once in a while the storytelling takes minor risks, as in a very good episode tracing Las Colinas’ history through five decades in a string of flashbacks. The amiable cast carries the narrative through its lack of real urgency.
