The violent series once again is breathlessly plotted, and the production details all but make you smell the stench of the mangy streets.
-
It may not feel as fresh a fighter as it did last season, but I’d be willing to bet “A Thousand Blows” still has a few rounds left in it.
-
I like A Thousand Blows most when it dares to put character ahead of story. More Mary Carr, please.
-
When it’s hitting full stride — in those boxing bouts or with the delicious twist to the Forty Elephants’ central con — A Thousand Blows really is knockout stuff, punching hard, the main event.
-
Doherty takes these fleeting insights and turns them into a psychodrama that leaves a lasting impression. But that says more about her talent than the quality of this muddled second outing.
-
Ultimately a feeble crime-fiction contender in its second go-round, courtesy of perfunctory plotting and a habitual desire to imagine the past in preachy present-day terms.
