"Items" is like NBC's "The Office" on laughing gas - the same kind of poker-faced dysfunction in a crushingly ordinary setting, but faster and funnier.
-
10 Items or Less is a quick hit of inanity, as close to The Office as anything else.
-
It's as much miss as hit. [1 Dec 2006, p.75]
-
There are no deep belly laughs here but you can count on a steady stream of chuckles, more from the characters than the situations.
-
"10 Items" isn't a great comedy yet, but it often takes time.
-
The show, in its way, is too slight to be totally fulfilling, tending to collapse into slapstick, but it can get by on moments.
-
It's partially improvised, which comes off looking like they're having more fun than we are.
-
While you have to give them credit for trying something at least a little different, the creators and cast try way too hard to pull laughs out of the situation and the show comes off as forced and unbelievable.
-
The improvisations are sometimes so forced that I swear you can actually see the actors thinking about what to say next.
-
Most of the time, [Lehr] and the show are insufferable.
-
"10 Items or Less" labors too hard at being clever and occasionally teeters into shrill mode where a half-dozen characters are all yelling at each other simultaneously.
-
Bluntly put, neither the writers nor the actors are good enough at what they're trying to do to justify trying to do it. They'd all be better off making "10 Items" a traditional scripted show, because then it would stand a better chance of making sense.
-
Yet another doomed and dreadful attempt to bring improv comedy to television.
