As much as the film would like to blow the lid off immigrant misery, it deals only in caricatures.
  1. Lee's trickery is dazzling in flashes but also monotonously strenuous -- the derangement factor is high but there's little evidence of authentic lunacy.
  2. Not a movie that can afford to take itself seriously.
  3. Aspires to be both stylish and coarse, camp and vulgar -- which is pretty much how Bette Midler plays it.
  4. Mehta feels compelled to twist the screw, shamelessly plying her audience with mawkish tropes wearing the garb of "innocence."
  5. More commendable as social protest than as filmmaking.

"Sopranos" vet Dominic Chianese is squandered as a banal father confessor.
  6. Something lured Paul Cox down memory lane, but he should have stayed at home.
  7. The viewer, though unavoidably alert, is before long too numb to care.
  8. Its exploration of faith and love is skin deep.
  9. A feel-good, fatalist placebo.
  10. Gainsbourg is virtually incidental to her mate's screeching navel-serenade, which maintains a stranglehold on the declarative first-person mode of its title.
  11. Jones's documentary, named for the opening song on Foxtrot, is most effective as a poison-pen missive to Corporate Rock.
  12. Polished and visualized with a sharp sense of place, writer-director Robert Connolly's drama is propped up by bogus science (the relationship between stock undulations and the Mandelbrot set is never made plausible), and the characters are paint-by-numbers.

Broadway dreamgirl Jennifer Holliday's musical interludes occasionally relieve this mélange of recycled social morality lessons.
  13. A discombobulating mix of blood-and-grit docu-realism and moony multiplex contrivance.
  14. Seymour returns to the Spokane Indian Reservation after a 16-year absence for a friend's funeral. The predictable conflicts ensue, often in histrionic dialogue declaimed through clenched teeth.
  15. Schneebaum is a great subject; the film doesn't quite make the most of him.
  16. The exposition is thick, the characterization choppy, the wigs terrible.
  17. The film allots far too much time to the cultural exchange program between the fugitive and his aide, in which Otomo can recap his sorrowful biography to a sympathetic audience surrogate.
  18. The feature itself remains a grotesquely enjoyable turn through the pulp-cinema wringer; hell, it could prove to be Mansfield's most enduring work.
  19. Slack, saccharine script.
  20. Elling is nothing if not carefully controlled hokum -- both actors, the director, and screenwriter all worked it through first as a stage adaptation of a novel by Ingvar Ambjornsen.
  21. The movie is typical Hill-pulp: modestly scaled and efficiently cheesy.
  22. Adroit but finally a trifle flat, Mad Love doesn't galvanize its outrage the way, say, Jane Campion might have done, but at least it possesses some.
  23. Can any American filmmaker other than the Farrellys make a rom-com in which the principals engage in activities apart from the tiresomely tireless dissection of rom?
  24. French director David Fourier's six-minute mock-instructional free association, "Majorettes in Space," is alone almost worth the price of admission.
  25. The irrepressible Walken smiles benignly down on his colleagues, secure in the knowledge that his antics have capsized sturdier vessels than this. Playing a supposed health-food nut, he enters the movie chewing and doesn't stop until he's devoured every scene down to the props.

Viewers must get in touch with their inner child to fall for Belle's eventual love for Beast. The film seems somewhat aware of this, casting an ambiguous hue on its happily-ever-after conclusion.
  26. A diverting pulp time-waster.
