  1. Don't be surprised if, in the middle of The Guardian, you get an overpowering sense of déjà vu. Assuming you've seen "An Officer and a Gentleman," "Top Gun" or any of the myriad basic-training films Hollywood churns out, you've seen The Guardian.
  2. Though there are some funny sequences, the frothy Bubble Boy evaporates without delivering enough belly laughs.
  3. 9
Long on imaginative design but less substantial in narrative, this dreary story of fighting the power is more numbing than thought-provoking.
  4. Exhale and enjoy Keenen Ivory Wayans' culturally disreputable I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, a sendup of black street comedy that's equally crude, funny - and sentimental. [26 Jan 1989, p.2D]

  5. This is a romantic comedy, not a sci-fi adventure tale. But the actions, choices and general behavior of the characters are oddly removed from what goes in the real world.
  6. This is a slow if stylish slog through familiar terrain.
  7. Even though the film can’t focus on one subject, Hands of Stone does boast notable performances from its leads, especially Ramirez.
  8. It's fun to see somebody revive the amnesia genre - how long has it been? - but the conceit quickly grows irksome. Only Thompson, who manages to be appealing in both of her roles, will likely reap much from this DOA folly. [23 Aug 1991, Life, p.4D]

  9. Like a politician who waters down his message to gain favor with the masses rather than truly serving his constituency, Man of the Year seems determined to play it safe on all counts.
  10. Heaven is saved only by the power of an occasional hypnotic image.
  11. The film is more interesting around the edges than down the middle, but even the edges aren't that sharp. [17 Feb 1989, p.6D]

  12. Made of Honor has some funny moments, and it keeps your attention, but it's certainly not worth rushing out to the multiplex and paying top dollar for. Catch it on TV on a lazy afternoon with little else to do.
  13. Begins promisingly and entertains for a stretch because you think it's leading to something more than one of the movie year's flattest conclusions.
  14. Might have been more appropriately titled "Hodgepodge." What starts out with a sense of quirky fun loses direction and devolves into a mishmash of story lines.
  15. Packed with digs at Bush-Cheney that even Democrats could find heavy-handed, the movie's lumbering approach reminds us that, OK, Emmerich did "Independence Day" -- but also 1998's "Godzilla," which began sinking back into the sea in week two.
  16. For hilarity, characterization and clever structure, "The Hangover" is far superior. Still, there are some laughs in this uneven but good-natured raunchfest.
  17. A brilliant idea that seems to lack the vision to be great.
  18. This too-belated reprise from the same filmmaking duo isn't any model, but it ought to amuse fans of the original. [23 July 1993, p.5D]

  19. Lottery Ticket is no prize.
  20. This misguided chick flick jumps through a lot of hoops just to state the obvious: "Life goes on, enjoy the time you have."
  21. Tells an increasingly outlandish story with very funny (and often gross) moments. But about an hour in, it grows derivative and disappointing.
  22. It's an innocuous, occasionally cute movie made watchable by the appealing Mandy Moore and hunky Matthew Goode, a Brit who has a bit of Hugh Grant charm in an otherwise silly role.
  23. Lacks tension or mystery. Even the courtroom scenes feel artificial.
  24. Dramatically empty Norse warrior adventure.

  25. For someone of De Niro’s reputation, this Intern gig is a thankless job.
  26. Stereotypical, banally written bloodbath.
  27. Canyon is similarly slick, though even more heavy-handed in hammering home its points. [26 Dec 1991]

  28. Already too long. It makes you want to start moving globs of dirt to tunnel out of the theater as the movie ends with the famous theme to "The Great Escape."
  29. The nasty, overlong and undisciplined sourball of a sex farce about a mother-daughter con team will nonetheless satisfy bigenerational libidinous fantasies.
  30. This movie-within-a-movie action-comedy spoof is a too long, too loud tease as it toys with the Schwarzen-dude's well-toned cinematic image. [18 Jun 1993, p.1D]
