From the 3D to 2D perspective shifts, the surreal visuals and infectious soundtrack, Anodyne 2: Return to Dust is mind-bending in a multitude of ways. This is a game that is full of character, thoughtful storytelling and presentation flair that should be tried by most, even if the experience is not for everyone.

Speed Limit's tough, and frustrating, gameplay might mean it doesn't flow quite as nicely as we'd like but you have to admire the way it combines a heap of classic gameplay styles into one cohesive title.

Yupitergrad is a fun VR title with brilliant swinging mechanics. It's a short game unless you go deep on the time trials but the experience is well worth it.

Bullet Beat's mix of shoot 'em up action and booming music works well initially but the simplicity of the gameplay and a general lack of features soon take the shine off of what could have been a decent effort.

Neptunia Virtual Stars may be an action game but it has many similarities to the rest of the series. The characters talk too much and the gameplay is quite simple despite the complicated tutorials but once you get into it the action is fast paced and inoffensive.

Getting a remaster of one of our favourite Xbox Live Indie Games titles is a real treat and almost a decade later Shoot 1UP still delivers fun and novel shoot 'em up action in spades.

Pumpkin Jack is a well done throwback to 3D platformers of yesteryear. Unfortunately it also has some of their bad habits such as on-rails minecart sections and a final boss you'll hate more than our burning disdain for the music of Simply Red.

We Were Here Together's basic idea of co-operation and communication is sound but the game's basic presentation, occasional tech issues and needlessly obtuse puzzles mean it often feels like a chore rather than any sort of fun. We liked what it was trying to do but ultimately resented how it did it.

With a decently told romantic plotline, How to Take Off Your Mask Remastered doesn't do a lot to stray from the genre's comfortable ground. All the cast seems to play double-lives but it quickly likes to concern itself with just our two protagonists. The splitting narrative does allow players to get more game for their money but, as someone who rarely likes visual novels, this doesn't change my tune.

Void Gore is an okay shoot 'em up but one that is let down by some lazy/minimalist (depending on how kind you're feel) level design and clumsy visuals. We enjoyed it while it lasted but that wasn't very long.

Natsuki Chronicles takes the high quality shoot 'em up gameplay of Ginga Force, flips it ninety degrees and delivers a great shoot 'em up with a rewarding upgrade system. Newbies might struggle a little but genre fans will have a blast.

UltraGoodness 2 is a sequel to a game that never made it to consoles. The king hates everything, so it must die. We're not quite sure why, but it's a fun shooter all the same. Just a shame it gives up its entire trophy haul in less than a third of the levels. It's a fair game but it's hamstrung a bit by no checkpoints on later levels.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is another great addition to the Ys series of JRPGs. The gameplay loop does settle in very quickly with some repetitive environments but the combat is superb as always and the new traversal abilities are a lot of fun to use.

Waves Out! Tries to evoke a sense of nostalgia with its simplistic party game concept and retro visuals, but just ends up feeling dated. The single player is vacant of challenge or ideas and the multiplayer doesn’t fare much better. One to miss.

We Were Here won't wow you on any sort of technical level but its co-op only puzzle solving gameplay is interesting and worth checking out if you have the right friend to play with.

The Pedestrian is an ace collection of puzzles thematically linked by some very clever set dressing as you traverse 3D environments via 2D puzzles. It's really quite good. Get on it.

Ginga Force is a high-quality shoot 'em up that has enough content for you to keep playing and replaying. Shoot 'em up fans will love it and this is the kind of thing we love to see on PSN.

Gods Will Fall has some strong ideas but the randomness doesn't add to the fun, it adds to the tedium. Harsh punishment and weak rewards makes it hard to recommend, despite the enjoyble boss fights and Bloodlust mechanic.

Much like the warring tribes in the board game that this title is based on, the various ideals that make up this game don't quite work together as you would hope they would. Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood tries valiantly to tell a story while getting you to think and move smart. Ultimately however, the game boils down to a technically proficient, yet repetitive button masher with minimal next gen trimmings and a sense that this game could have been a whole lot more than it is.

Vera Blanc: Ghost in the Castle takes an interesting comic book style and combines it with a decent spooky tale. The art style is different but it struggles to maintain a consistent quality. The inclusion of minigames does give players some light interaction but it hampers the game's brisk pace. Being asked to spot minor differences can derail any tension. Without those games, it's a more standard visual novel experience.

Redout: Space Assault is an unexpected departure for the series but is a solid, enjoyable and reasonably polished experience let down initially by slightly unintuitive controls, some missions that don't really land and visuals that can be a bit cluttered. Stick with it though and this is definitely worth playing.

Bonkies is a solid cooperative effort. Story and presentation is kept light-hearted and the building doesn't feel hectic enough to ruin friendships. Some of the stages are kept fairly straight forward but the increasing complexity of the campaign does give a crew enough to consider. It's a shame the levels roll out in such a linear fashion and I do feel the time limits are an unnecessary addition. Solo players will feel short-changed but Bonkies feels good with friends.

Balancelot is a great pun but doesn't amount to much otherwise. Sure it's an easy enough platinum but it's very little fun to play due to the controls being a mess on PS4. Switch off your TV set and do something less boring instead.

Windfolk is a short but enjoyable time when you're flying through the air at speed but the game often slams the brakes on to force you into more confined areas or weak combat which doesn't take advantage of the flight mechanics at all.

Loot Hero DX has some lovely visuals but has next to no gameplay. Trophy chasers will lap this up but, even at the cheap asking price, there's no substance here at all. You're buying a pretty Platinum and nothing else. But if they use this engine for a real game, we'll be well up for trying it.

MXGP 2020 – The Official Motocross Game is a great racing game, just don't be expecting to win races quickly. All the fun of the real life sport and then some. Perhaps a little on the harsh side for those unfamiliar with this particular facet of motorsport, especially in terms of it assuming you're up to speed with key mechanics.

Heroes of Hammerwatch is a clever and compelling rogue-lite with a steep learning curve and crack-like addictiveness but it is one of the least beginner-friendly games we've ever seen. As ever, basic playtesting should pick up things like that but, if you can stick with it, prepare to lose days, weeks and probably months.

Ultimate Fishing Simulator is very much as advertised. Perhaps a little on the dry side for the novice as it does expect a level of familiarity to some of the mechanics. Somehow compulsive to play, if a little rough around the edges. Maybe not so ultimate as more super.
