  1. Makes for a compelling comedy-drama about family ties. It's only when the cancer takes center stage that the movie feels like a wash.
  2. The set design of Thirteen Ghosts may have been expensive, but its thrills are cheap.

Director Ernest Dickerson uses elegant visuals, suspenseful editing and lighting to give Bones its edge.
  3. You may be drawn to Intimacy's graphic scenes, but you'll emerge convinced there's more to life -- and the film -- than sex.
  4. This film and Miller's vision remind us of the danger of giving in to fear.
  5. There's no bite or sting, nor is there a single moment when the film is anything close to scary. It isn't ever engaging, either; it's a dull, sluggish bum-out.
  6. Often feels choppy, as if chunks of connecting narrative had been lopped off in the editing room.
  7. What's lacking is any sense of Beverly's brightness. She's supposedly smart, but she never displays a shred of intelligence.
  8. Might have been unbearable if Linklater hadn't filled it with so much self-deprecating humor, undercutting the pretentiousness whenever it threatens to become too thick.
  9. Bandits isn't much more than a pleasant dawdle, one made extra-likable by Thornton and Blanchett, whose ace performances keep the film zipping along even at its most predictable.
  10. The movie is a lowbrow showcase for an equally lowbrow comedian, and how much of it you can endure depends entirely on how you feel about Kattan.
  11. The creative vigor of its originality, distilled in a pure and unadulterated form, is simply exhilarating.
  12. It just requires an open mind, a love of film and a willingness to dream.
  13. Sobieski manages to make Jennifer's inevitable transformation more than a little bittersweet. Apparently even clichés click sometimes.

Realistic, it's not. But Max Keeble's Big Move, predictable though it may be, makes most of the right moves for the older elementary/younger middle school market.
  14. Eclectic, grandly engaging documentary.
  15. Joy Ride is also surprisingly funny, thanks mostly to Zahn.
  16. Even if the movie loses its nerve at the end, that doesn't take anything away from Washington's performance.
  17. Serendipity's finale is a perfect crowd-pleaser, sweet and unlikely and over the top.

Until it collapses into a pile of contrivances, Don't Say a Word makes for a serviceable, workmanlike thriller.
  18. A hit-and-miss affair, but it's smart and good-natured enough to guarantee Stiller an open invitation to host VH1's annual Fashion Awards.
  19. What's missing, really, is a point. Like "Snow Falling on Cedars," Hicks composes every shot in Hearts in Atlantis as if it were his last.
  20. Wields some power, but it's hard to shake the feeling you've seen it all before.
  21. Glitter, the kind of movie only 11-year-old girls who dot their i's with hearts would find bearable.

A workmanlike thriller that works. The film is a victory for both first-time feature director Daniel Sackheim and budding star Leelee Sobieski.
  22. Cynics may roll their eyes at Hardball's earnestness, but the movie proves even the most conventional stories can move and engage you, provided they're told well.
  23. The movie still manages to unearth laughs, some of them pretty big, especially once Shanté's program is under way.
  24. Its failure to be extraordinary is thus all the more cutting, and its redundancy all the more unforgivable.
  25. In a film overstuffed with tragedy, the most painful one might be the gradual transformation of Fernando's moral and intellectual indignation into a weary, cynical detachment.
  26. A formulaic and didactic but good-hearted and sometimes amusing underdog sports yarn and plea for social acceptance.
