Twitch-based gameplay at its finest, with some of the best music ever featured in a game. Wrong Number ramps everything up to varying degrees of success.

With an amazing story full of murder and mystery, Famicom Detective Club is a remake worth investigating.

Eventually, you’ll have access to a ton of content and many hours of gameplay. A New Beginning is a good entry point for those new to the series, and certainly worth a look for fans – just be aware that the typically slow pace of the franchise is even slower here.

Not a Hero is a funny and frenzied game that will have you laughing out loud as you attempt to conquer its varied range of challenges, even if there are a few issues with its cover system and level structure.

Penny's Big Breakaway is a fun 3D platformer with great locomotion, but a whole host of bugs and checkpoint issues spoil the good time.

The SNES-era visuals and bouncy soundtrack hide a universe of complexity, decision making and intrigue. It has a charm that will ring true with gamers of a certain age, and for anyone who is up for the challenge. Yes, The Escapists is challenging, but it is also very rewarding, and something about those little sprites kept dragging me back for more.

Sunless Sea is a unique title. A rogue-like set in a Lovecraftian nightmare with table-top RPG elements backed up by some truly excellent writing. The slow pace, and narrative delivery may well put some players off though.

Hell is Other Demons is an addictive title that rewards the time you put into it. A decent amount of content and difficulty make it well worth considering.

The game excels in nearly all aspects of the genre and adds a few fresh ideas but, in the end, it may struggle to succeed due to the aversion some people have to a game of this type. But with its simple UI, logical puzzles, fantastic plot and beautiful setting, it’s an excellent place to start for those who have never dabbled in an adventure game.

Trackmania can be incredibly fun, but some awkward track design and camera issues can really dampen the experience.

Go into Nuclear Blaze knowing what to expect and there's a lot of simple firefighting fun to be had. Oh, and there are cute kittens to save, too.

While Expeditions: Viking won’t be winning any awards for ground-breaking storytelling or innovative gameplay, it’s compelling in just the right way that keeps commanding attention throughout. I found it to be a lot of fun, if a little unpolished in places.

As a dark, story-driven settlement sim, Gord offers a moderate amount of replayability and a pretty compelling central narrative.

Jammed full of the nuts-out, irreverent humour that has come to be synonymous with the brand, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel firmly refuses to fix what ain’t broke and delivers what arguably amounts to a feature-length expansion to Borderlands 2, but still manages to be utterly engrossing at the same time. Looting, laughing and butt-slamming your way across the moon couldn’t be more fun.

Die hard fans of XCOM will likely fall in love with Phoenix Point, a hard-as-nails challenge that offers procedurally-generated replayability and a suite of tactics to help you thrive on and off the battlefield.

Snake Pass is a unique take on the classic puzzle platformer with a genuinely inventive style of movement that reinvents the genre, but a difficult camera and archaic save system takes some of the shine off.

The real Paradox, then, is what exactly this game wants to be: visual novel or hardcore dungeon crawler. What’s here is entertaining enough, no need to worry about that, but you’ll enjoy it more once you accept that you’ve got a slightly sleazy schizophrenic on your hands.

Almost as simple as a shooter can get, Puppygames’ space blaster owes its success to our inability to be satisfied by a personal best. The premise and genre make more sense on the Vita than the PS4 (though options are always nice to have), but Titan Attacks is charmingly simple and hugely playable on any format.

Collar x Malice is one of the best otome visual novels I’ve played with lots of things to shake up the formula for the better but some typos in the text sour the experience.
