Like the conventions it bucks, this one escapes the faux pas of a potentially poor start, and gets exponentially better each time you play.

Whoowasit? is an endearing and engaging game, which offers a lot of charm, a lot of narrative and a lot of excitement for primary school age children. It's let down slightly by a few poor interface choices, and by the fact that it's a little too long and complex for the age group that's likely to enjoy it most.

Quibbles about the controls and orientation quirks aside, The Black Tome of Ice is definitely a worthwhile sequel to Dragon Fantasy. Heck, it’s a worthwhile RPG regardless of how familiar you are with the first game, or how interested you are in a game that pokes fun of cliches.

There might not be that much tactical depth here, but this is the sort of game you’ll dip into for a couple of minutes only to look up after a few hours have passed. And that’s really the hallmark of this genre. It’s unlikely that this is going to dethrone the clashing king of the genre, but if you like your action a little more helicoptery and your gameplay closer to the hard end of the midcore, then War Commander: Rogue Assault is well worth a look.

If you are a fan of Japanese humour or simply looking for something a little different in you game library Shin Chan Me And The Professor On Summer Vacation: The Endless Seven Day Journey is well worth investigating.

Though it might be difficult to garner a maximum score in Clockwork Brain, the bulk of the application is a fantastic collection of brain teasers. Quirky and stylized, it's gratifying to feel intelligent through the rapid solving of puzzles and no two ever feel alike.

Aside from losing points for taking longer, there's no real penalty for not rushing. And it's not a matter of reflexes-- just patience. The puzzles can be pretty challenging, too, so clearing all five houses (with 12 rooms apiece, and a sixth house coming soon) should keep you occupied for a while.

Overall, Heads Up! won’t carry your party into the wee hours on its own, but it’s a great way to pass a little time while you’re waiting for the brie to hit room temperature.

It's nearly perfectly implemented on iOS, and offers a compelling match-style puzzle game that manages to distance itself from other stalwarts to become well worth your while.

While the idea of a math game may sound like a nightmare to some, anyone who craves a flock of great puzzles will love counting these sheep.

Honestly, the replay value can be forgiven; Disney Fish Hooks succeeds in just about everything it set out to do. It provides a quality product that extends the Disney name, it's faithful to the show, and it's completely free.

In spite of these issues, my biggest problem with the game is that there isn't more of it. I'm having a blast playing Madcoaster, and I keep going back to try and get just a bit further. It's a ton of fun, and the rollercoaster tie-in (while making zero sense) is awesome. Please give us more Madcoaster, Chillingo! Post haste!

It’s amazing how much of a difference knowing how to play properly can make. After my initial attempt I was ready to write A Planet of Mine off as a frustrating mess. Now that I’ve finally gotten the hang of it (no thanks to the tutorial) I actually kind of love it. If you like your spacefaring empire expansion simulations cute and (relatively) accessible, it’s absolutely worth checking out. Maybe even a purchase.

Minor difficulties and annoyances aside, The Drop Out is a serious contender for best physics puzzler on the iPhone. It's enjoyable, challenging, and most of all, fun.

Despite its sometimes-slow battles (which honestly do speed up a bit once you gain a few levels and learn how to use your skills efficiently), Attack the Light is a solid, budget-priced RPG that gets by on its own merits regardless of how much you know about Steven Universe.

Dino Hunter: Deadly Shores dishes up tons of behemoth-shooting action. It’s an easy game to enjoy.

Even with its room for improvement, Snowball! is a frosty treat for fans of pinball and pixel art. For those who don’t want to venture out into the cold, Snowball! will evoke the spirit of winter without the seasonal side-effects.

If you've utterly had it with endless runners, Team Awesome might not help you change your mind. You're still essentially running on a single path and sticking it to bad guys and objects. But if you just want to play a game that does something interesting and fun with the genre, go ahead and pull on your tights.

If you’ve had a tough day, and the soup on the stove still has a while to go, then give Anomaly Agent a shot – and lose yourself in a simpler world. For a little while, at least.

Feeling like a premium experience at a free-to-play price, Rogue Wizards is an excellent conversion of a PC based roguelike. Ideal for dipping into, it’ll scratch that itch on the commute while also fulfilling your needs when you want a longer session in the evening.

Too easy, but still highly engaging.

The micro-games do get pretty hectic as you progress but never to the point of feeling impossible.

Sable Maze: Forbidden Garden has a lot of strong points without any glaring flaws. The story is a little predictable, but you really won’t mind as you stumble through the richly detailed scenes solving puzzles with an inventory full of items. Plenty of fun and plenty of challenge, just don’t tell your mom how useful she would be if she were an ermine.

Charming and refreshing.

The only other thing with Food Processing is there should be more of it. It's not the most original title in the App Store, but it sure is well-made, and most importantly, fun.

I'm still sitting here bleary-eyed, blister on my finger, totally satisfied for having played this game way past the time I should be in bed.

Just be warned when you go in that Yankai’s Peak is the sort of peak that will happily throw you off its summit, and you’ll be better placed to enjoy everything that this slightly mind-bending literal shape-shifter has to offer.

Like the best shoot-em-ups, play here is about fine margins and non-stop action, and once the onslaught begins, it's especially hard to stop the beat running away with you.
