(#10) This just in: An impressive ensemble cast does not always make for a satisfying crime comedy. In this case, it's not even close. The latest from director Tate Taylor (The Girl on the Train, The Help) wastes the talents of (among others) Allison Janney, Regina Hall, Awkwafina, Mila Kunis, Samira Wiley, Wanda Sykes, and Juliette Lewis on a satirical misfire about an unhappy housewife who turns her adulterous husband's sudden death into a chance to become a local celebrity by hiding his body and claiming that he was abducted. But subtle, sophisticated, insightful, and funny are not the words showing up in reviews for Yuba County.
“One may wonder how Tate Taylor ... came to direct this amoral, repellent bag of sick, a movie whose biggest ambition in life is to start a bidding war at a late 1990s Sundance Film Festival and then bomb at the box office. Call it water finding its own level, maybe.” —Glenn Kenny, The New York Times
