The 15 Worst Movies of 2018
Updated January 3, 2019 to add late-arriving dud Holmes & Watson.
Above are the lowest-scoring films released in the United States between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018. Films are ranked by Metascore (an average of grades given by top professional critics) prior to rounding, and any titles with fewer than 7 reviews are excluded. All scores are from December 20, 2018.
(#5) Dan Fogelman has worked in both film and television, achieving success in both media with titles like Crazy, Stupid, Love (which he wrote) and the hit NBC series This Is Us (which he created and produces). But his second outing as a film director is a complete disaster despite a strong cast (inlcuding Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Annette Bening, Mandy Patinkin, and Antonio Banderas). The result was widely panned as overly sentimental, sadistic, manipulative, and convoluted (compared to an "emotional mugging" by one critic and a "kidney stone" by another), and was one of the biggest box office flops in recent memory, grossing a shockingly low $4.1 million domestically despite opening on over 2,600 screens.
“If all you need from a love story are two people smiling at each other and a narrator saying they’re in love, then Life Itself is for you. If all you require to show the passage of years is a CG montage or some cheap makeup, then Life Itself is for you. If the only way you’ll know things are tough is if everyone dies, then Life Itself is for you.” —Robert Abele, TheWrap
