20 Worst Film Directors of the 21st Century (So Far)
Recently, we looked at the best directors of the 21st century so far. Now, it's time for the flipside: our list of the century's worst filmmakers, ranked by their average Metascores.
To be included, a director must have four or more eligible films. Such films have seven or more reviews from professional critics and were first released (in any country) on or after January 1, 2000, and must have been released (including as a straight-to-Netflix streaming release) at some point in the USA. Multi-director anthology films are excluded, as are theatrical re-releases of older films. Averages were calculated using Metascores from July 12, 2017, and include films released through July 7, 2017.
#1
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer
Film's least dynamic duo, these longtime collaborators continue to outscore the previously mentioned Uwe Boll as well as Tom Six and Dinesh D'Souza. (The latter two are each one film short of qualifying for this list, but would rank fourth and second, respectively).
Like a pair of Bizarro Edgar Wrights, Friedberg and Seltzer can take any genre of film and turn it into a miserable, unfunny spoof. Flavorwire's Jason Bailey calls their filmography "horrifying," while the New York Post's Larry Getlen notes that the two directors "have the comedic sense of a pre-ghost Ebenezer Scrooge."
Keep in mind that the duo's average omits two recent, barely-screened releases (2015's Superfast! and 2013's The Starving Games), as critics have mostly given up reviewing their films. As would you.
