10 Films to See in January
Many of 2016's potential award contenders opened in December ... if you lived in Los Angeles or New York by the one or two theaters where they were screening to qualify for Academy Awards consideration. Those films—including the latest from Martin Scorsese, Mike Mills, Peter Berg, and more—will get a proper nationwide theatrical release in January. Find details on those movies, plus other promising new January releases (including that rarest of things: a good new film from M. Night Shyamalan), below.
Following 2013‘s Lone Survivor and this year’s Deepwater Horizon, Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg complete their American heroism trilogy with what might end up being the best-reviewed film of the three. Patriots Day is an account of the Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath. The film combines the story of Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Wahlberg), a composite character, with those of Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Dun "Danny" Meng (Jimmy O. Yang), Jessica Kensky (Rachel Brosnahan), Patrick Downes (Christopher O'Shea), and Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) to capture the courage of the people of Boston.
