10 Films to See in January
Many of 2016's potential award contenders opened in December ... if you lived in Los Angeles or New York by the one or two theaters where they were screening to qualify for Academy Awards consideration. Those films—including the latest from Martin Scorsese, Mike Mills, Peter Berg, and more—will get a proper nationwide theatrical release in January. Find details on those movies, plus other promising new January releases (including that rarest of things: a good new film from M. Night Shyamalan), below.
The latest from Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) is an adaptation of the award-winning children’s fantasy novel by Patrick Ness. In a highly praised lead performance, Lewis MacDougall plays 12-year-old Conor, who is struggling with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness as well as bullies at school. Nightly visits from a tree-shaped, storytelling monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) help Conor deal with these difficulties. Most critics have been pleased with the film’s ability to combine stunning visuals with a deeply emotional story.
