Those films—including the latest from Martin Scorsese, Mike Mills, Peter Berg, and more—will get a proper nationwide theatrical release in January. Find details on those movies, plus other promising new January releases (including that rarest of things: a good new film from M. Night Shyamalan), below.
Early reviews have been mixed, and Michael Keaton has not received the recognition some might have expected after strong turns in Birdman and Spotlight. But this biopic about McDonald’s “founder” Ray Kroc has earned enough positive response to merit a recommendation anyway. Written by Robert Siegel and directed by John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr. Banks), the film chronicles how Kroc (Keaton) wrestled control away from Mac and Dick McDonald (John Carroll Lynch and Nick Offerman), who established the original fast food burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Laura Dern, B.J. Novak, Patrick Wilson, and Linda Cardellini have supporting roles.
