10 Films to See in January
Many of 2016's potential award contenders opened in December ... if you lived in Los Angeles or New York by the one or two theaters where they were screening to qualify for Academy Awards consideration. Those films—including the latest from Martin Scorsese, Mike Mills, Peter Berg, and more—will get a proper nationwide theatrical release in January. Find details on those movies, plus other promising new January releases (including that rarest of things: a good new film from M. Night Shyamalan), below.
The latest feature from writer-director Mike Mills (Beginners) follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a single mother who is raising her son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann), in 1979 Santa Barbara. Helping Dorothea are Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a punk artist living in the Fields’ home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a teenage neighbor Jamie fancies. While the film has received excellent reviews so far, it is Bening’s performance that stands out, with experts predicting an Oscar nomination after the actress already earned Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award nominations to go along with recognition from multiple critic groups.
