12+ Films to See in December
With Academy Award nominations rapidly approaching, December is the month when several major contenders will finally be unveiled. While most moviegoers must wait until January to see films like Martin Scorsese's Silence, Ben Affleck's Live by Night, Mike Mills' 20th Century Women, and Theodore Melfi's Hidden Figures, there are still plenty of solid choices headed to a cineplex near you this month, including Damien Chazelle's La La Land, Denzel Washington's Fences, Pablo Larraín's Jackie, and more. We've picked out the best of the bunch below.
In the December sci-fi film that is not related to Star Wars, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt play two passengers aboard the Avalon, a spaceship transporting thousands of people to a new planet. Trouble begins when they wake up from suspended animation 90 years before they are supposed to reach their destination. As the two begin to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they fall in love with each other. Scripted by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), directed by Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) and with Michael Sheen, Andy Garcia, and Laurence Fishburne in supporting roles, the film will test the star power of its young leads.
