12+ Films to See in December
With Academy Award nominations rapidly approaching, December is the month when several major contenders will finally be unveiled. While most moviegoers must wait until January to see films like Martin Scorsese's Silence, Ben Affleck's Live by Night, Mike Mills' 20th Century Women, and Theodore Melfi's Hidden Figures, there are still plenty of solid choices headed to a cineplex near you this month, including Damien Chazelle's La La Land, Denzel Washington's Fences, Pablo Larraín's Jackie, and more. We've picked out the best of the bunch below.
Buzz has been building for writer-director Damien Chazelle’s follow-up to his critical hit Whiplash ever since it opened the Venice Film Festival. Emma Stone, winner of Best Actress in Venice, stars as an aspiring actress who begins a rollercoaster romance with her Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad co-star, Ryan Gosling. He plays a jazz musician struggling to survive by playing piano in dingy bars. With great chemistry between the leads, six original songs and Chazelle’s energetic appropriation of various movie musical styles, this might not be the film that convinces those who don’t like musicals to finally embrace them, but it’s definitely going to try.
