These Are the Best (and Worst) Star Trek Movies, Ranked
The voyages of the starship Enterprise have enjoyed a long life on the big screen through decades of marauding aliens, environmental crises, and temporal anomalies. Although the crew has achieved its mission of boldly going where no one has gone before, the various films have had spottier levels of success, at least with critics.
Now that Star Trek Beyond has arrived in theaters, take a look at how the new film compares with those that came before it, with rankings courtesy of our unique Metascore rating system.
Look, trying to transition from one Enterprise crew to another 80 years later—within the same movie, no less—is no easy feat. But this film wasn’t up to the challenge. Although Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Data and the rest of The Next Generation got plenty of screentime, it would have been better to re-introduce them with a more compelling story—one that wasn’t hampered by a mess of exposition and navel-gazing.
“For Trek devotees, it's a supernova of unpredictable sci-fi thrills, though the earthbound may find this trip through the heavens a bit tiresome, especially when the movie tries too hard to wax philosophic.” —Michel Marriott, Newsweek
