This adaptation of M. L. Stedman’s novel by writer-director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) has earned plenty of press thanks to the on-set love affair between stars Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender, but it remains to be seen if their real-life love will translate to on-screen chemistry. Set on the Western Australia coast after World War I, the story follows lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Fassbender) and his wife Isabel (Vikander), who discover a boat carrying a dead man and a two-month old baby. Rescuing the infant, they make the decision to raise her as their own, but several years later, Tom and Isabel meet the baby’s biological mother (Rachel Weisz).
