Meet This Year's Oscar Best Picture Contenders
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – November 11, 2018
Though the next batch of Academy Award nominees won't be unveiled until January 22, 2019, there's already plenty of Oscar buzz for films that have reached theaters in the past few months as well as a few more due to open in the coming weeks.
While the top two or three favorites have been well established since the major fall festivals (TIFF, Venice) ended in September, the remainder of the best picture field appears to be up for grabs. Which are this year's likeliest contenders for the top Oscar? In the gallery above, check out all of this year's top prospects (in alphabetical order).
In theaters December 19. One of the biggest wildcards this awards season—mainly because critics haven't seen it yet—is this Rob Marshall-directed sequel to the beloved 1964 film musical Mary Poppins, set two decades later. Only Dick Van Dyke (now 92) returns from the original cast, and he's joined by Emily Blunt, Ben Whishaw, Meryl Streep, and Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda, among other big names. The original Mary Poppins was nominated for best picture (and 12 other categories), though in recent years family films tend not to be so honored. In fact, no Disney-branded live-action film has received a best-picture nomination since that first Mary Poppins. But the reaction from a fall screening of the new film for theater owners was very positive, and Disney moved this year's Star Wars film to May to clear the way for Returns to have the December spotlight to itself, suggesting, at the very least, that the studio expects it to be a hit.
