Meet This Year's Oscar Best Picture Contenders
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – November 11, 2018
Though the next batch of Academy Award nominees won't be unveiled until January 22, 2019, there's already plenty of Oscar buzz for films that have reached theaters in the past few months as well as a few more due to open in the coming weeks.
While the top two or three favorites have been well established since the major fall festivals (TIFF, Venice) ended in September, the remainder of the best picture field appears to be up for grabs. Which are this year's likeliest contenders for the top Oscar? In the gallery above, check out all of this year's top prospects (in alphabetical order).
In limited release December 14 (expands wider Dec. 25). It likely won't score as highly as Barry Jenkins' previous film, the Oscar-winning Moonlight (though few films ever have), but the director's new adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel set in 1970s Harlem once again wowed critics when it debuted at TIFF in September. But while the drama seems destined to wind up on many critics' top 10 lists, Beale Street isn't necessarily headed for a best picture nomination. Distributor Annapurna recently moved the film back from a planned November release into the heart of the December blockbuster season, when it could get overlooked amid stiff competition (including from several of the distributor's other potential Oscar contenders). Had it been released in October, its best picture chances would be even rosier.
