Meet This Year's Oscar Best Picture Contenders
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – November 11, 2018
Though the next batch of Academy Award nominees won't be unveiled until January 22, 2019, there's already plenty of Oscar buzz for films that have reached theaters in the past few months as well as a few more due to open in the coming weeks.
While the top two or three favorites have been well established since the major fall festivals (TIFF, Venice) ended in September, the remainder of the best picture field appears to be up for grabs. Which are this year's likeliest contenders for the top Oscar? In the gallery above, check out all of this year's top prospects (in alphabetical order).
In theaters November 23. Any way you spell it, the latest from provocative Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) is certainly among this year's favorites to secure a best picture nomination. Possibly the director's most accessible film to date (though it's by no means conventional), The Favourite is a comedic 18th century costume drama starring Olivia Colman as an ailing Queen Anne and Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz as the backstabbing cousins who are competing to be her successor. The film wowed critics at Venice, where it won the festival's Grand Jury (second place) Prize, and it recently picked up 13 nominations from the British Independent Film Awards and another four from the Gotham Awards. It would be a surprise if an Oscar best picture nomination doesn't follow.
