Meet This Year's Oscar Best Picture Contenders
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – November 11, 2018
Though the next batch of Academy Award nominees won't be unveiled until January 22, 2019, there's already plenty of Oscar buzz for films that have reached theaters in the past few months as well as a few more due to open in the coming weeks.
While the top two or three favorites have been well established since the major fall festivals (TIFF, Venice) ended in September, the remainder of the best picture field appears to be up for grabs. Which are this year's likeliest contenders for the top Oscar? In the gallery above, check out all of this year's top prospects (in alphabetical order).
Previously in theaters (released Jul. 13); now on DVD/Blu-ray. One of 2018's most pleasant surprises, this indie dramedy (which follows an awkward 13-year-old played by Elsie Fisher through her final week of middle school) is the feature debut for comedian turned writer-director Bo Burnham. In addition to receiving stellar reviews, Eighth Grade has already picked up numerous honors at various festivals, and looks likely to be a staple of the year-end awards circuit after collecting a pair of nominations from the first-of-the-year Gotham Awards. It may be a stretch to expect a low-key summer indie about a middle-schooler to sneak into the best picture field, but it's not unimaginable. At a minimum, Burnham should be headed to a screenplay nomination.
