Meet This Year's Oscar Best Picture Contenders
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – November 11, 2018
Though the next batch of Academy Award nominees won't be unveiled until January 22, 2019, there's already plenty of Oscar buzz for films that have reached theaters in the past few months as well as a few more due to open in the coming weeks.
While the top two or three favorites have been well established since the major fall festivals (TIFF, Venice) ended in September, the remainder of the best picture field appears to be up for grabs. Which are this year's likeliest contenders for the top Oscar? In the gallery above, check out all of this year's top prospects (in alphabetical order).
In theaters November 16. Steve McQueen's 2013 drama 12 Years a Slave was that year's best-reviewed film and an Oscar best picture winner. Five years later, the director finally has a follow-up, and the good news is that it's great: Critics gave Widows mostly fantastic reviews after its festival debut. Unlike some of McQueen's past work, it's also a genre film (albeit an arty one that also addresses gender and other relevant issues), and a somewhat crowd-pleasing, accessible one at that. Unless it tanks at the box office next week or the Academy dismisses it because it's a heist thriller rather than a more "serious" work, a best picture nomination could be forthcoming.
