Meet This Year's Oscar Best Picture Contenders
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – November 11, 2018
Though the next batch of Academy Award nominees won't be unveiled until January 22, 2019, there's already plenty of Oscar buzz for films that have reached theaters in the past few months as well as a few more due to open in the coming weeks.
While the top two or three favorites have been well established since the major fall festivals (TIFF, Venice) ended in September, the remainder of the best picture field appears to be up for grabs. Which are this year's likeliest contenders for the top Oscar? In the gallery above, check out all of this year's top prospects (in alphabetical order).
In theaters December 25. A biopic centering on the early career of popular Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (played by Felicity Jones), the Mimi Leder-directed On the Basis of Sex was pegged as a potential best picture contender months ago. But now a number of factors seem to be working against the film. Sex had its world premiere at AFI Fest a few days ago, and critics who saw it there have been disappointed in the film, particularly in its one-dimensional, "hagiographic" approach to its subject. That makes inferior comparisons to 2018's other Ginsburg film, RBG (which is a favorite to secure a best documentary nomination), even more likely, and decreases the odds that Academy voters will nominate both. Finally, the trend over the past decade suggests that a film with a theatrical release so late in the year has no chance at actually winning best picture, though that doesn't rule out a nomination.
