Documentary debuts October 15 on Apple TV+
It has already been a pretty terrific year for music documentaries, from Questlove's joyous Summer of Soul to Edgar Wright's The Sparks Brothers. And now comes a look by another noted director (Todd Haynes, Carol) at one of the few bands in history more influential than Sparks. A famous quote often attributed to Brian Eno remarks that only 30,000 people purchased the original album by The Velvet Underground, but every one of those people started a band. While that may not technically be true regardless of the number used in the saying, it certainly captures the legacy of the truly groundbreaking Lou Reed-led band, which forever changed the sound of rock music. Haynes takes an appropriately unconventional approach to his subject, frequently letting the often-layered and split-screen images (including footage from the archives of Andy Warhol) speak for themselves, and critics loved the result when it debuted at Cannes this summer. There are some talking heads, however, including new interviews with the band's two surviving founding members, John Cale and Moe Tucker, as well as fans such as Jonathan Richman. If you don't have an Apple TV+ subscription, you can also look for The Velvet Underground in theaters on the same day.
