Steven Spielberg brings his childhood memories to cinematic life in this tribute to his mother and father. Written with Tony Kushner, the film follows Sammy Fabelman (Mateo Zoryon Francis-DeFord as the younger, Gabriel LaBelle as the teenager) as his passion for filmmaking grows amidst the very adult troubles of his artistic mother Mitzi (Michelle Williams), his scientific father Burt (Paul Dano), and Bennie Loewy (Seth Rogen), Burt’s best friend. Relying on prized collaborators Janusz Kaminski (cinematography), Michael Kahn (editing with Sarah Broshar), and John Williams, Spielberg has produced an extremely personal film that also interrogates the craft of filmmaking itself. As the winner of the Audience Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, The Fabelmans is likely to be a major player during awards season.
