After the shocking death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Marvel and director Ryan Cooler had to reimagine a franchise built upon the unmatchable charisma of its star. In this sequel to 2018’s Black Panther, the Marvel film with the highest Metascore to date, Wakanda is in mourning, and a new threat arrives from an underwater world: Tenoch Huerta’s Namor. Returning to battle him are Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba and new arrival Michaela Coel), as well as Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman). As with any Marvel property, future superheroes are introduced, including Dominique Thorne as RiRi Williams/Ironheart and the new Black Panther (odds are on Letitia Wright but it hasn’t leaked yet). Early social media reactions suggest bringing tissues to the theater.
