After leaving New York City at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic for his Trump-supporting hometown of Bad Axe, Michigan, filmmaker David Siev picked up his camera to chronicle his family’s battle to keep their restaurant open. Siev’s father, Chun, fled the Cambodian Killing Fields with his mother and five siblings in 1979, building a life in America, marrying his Mexican-American wife Rachel and starting her namesake restaurant. David’s not the only sibling to return to Bad Axe during the pandemic, as his older sister and her husband return to help with the business. It’s a messy and moving picture of a family in crisis and the ties (and scars) that bind generations.
