25 Misfires From Otherwise Great Film Directors
Last week, we looked at 30 filmmakers who made only one well-reviewed movie over their entire careers. Today, we examine the opposite group: directors who have nearly flawless careers, with only a single misfire (with a Metascore of 60 or lower) standing in the way of a perfect record of all-green scores.
Note that we only looked at directors who have made at least five films since 1980.
The one misfire:
58 Stone (2010)
He may not be a household name, but New York native John Curran has earned plenty of praise for his dramas (including, yes, Praise)—except for this 2010 Robert De Niro/Edward Norton thriller, a box office dud that critics found a bit too "preposterous" and "ridiculous" to take seriously despite some strong performances.
Everything else:
79 Praise (1998)
66 We Don't Live Here Anymore (2004)
69 The Painted Veil (2006)
78 Tracks (2013)
67 Chappaquiddick (2018)
