25 Misfires From Otherwise Great Film Directors
Last week, we looked at 30 filmmakers who made only one well-reviewed movie over their entire careers. Today, we examine the opposite group: directors who have nearly flawless careers, with only a single misfire (with a Metascore of 60 or lower) standing in the way of a perfect record of all-green scores.
Note that we only looked at directors who have made at least five films since 1980.
The one misfire:
53 The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (2013)
Known for his whimsically stylized (and often darkly comedic) output, the French director doesn't make many films. His only release in the past nine years is also his only film with sub-par reviews. Based on a book by Reif Larsen, Spivet barely made an impression during its brief U.S. theatrical run, where critics found little to praise aside from the visual flair.
Everything else:
66 Delicatessen (1991) *
73 The City of Lost Children (1995) *
63 Alien: Resurrection (1997)
69 Amélie (2001)
76 A Very Long Engagement (2004)
62 Micmacs (2009)
* Co-directed with Marc Caro
