Another in a long line of Disney live-action remakes stars singer-actress Halle Bailey as Ariel, a young mermaid with dreams of the world beyond the sea. Directed by Rob Marshall, who was at the helm for Mary Poppins Returns and Into the Woods, Mermaid has been a source of controversy since the racist backlash against Bailey's casting and more recently the design of Sebastian (voiced by David Diggs) and Flounder (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), but maybe the bones of the original will provide enough support to make it the rare live-action success with critics. With a strong supporting cast of Javier Bardem as King Triton and Melissa McCarthy as the evil Ursula, it might have a chance.
