With her feature debut, Chilean director Francisca Alegria uses magical realism to explore ecological and family trauma. It begins with Magdalena (Mia Maestro) rising from the dead out of a poisoned river in the south of Chile, bringing with her long-suppressed family secrets. Her widowed husband is understandably shocked, and her daughter (Leonor Varela) returns to the family farm with own children to care for her father. It’s a modern fable of death and renewal, denial and acceptance, guilt and atonement.
