In his sophomore feature, Swiss writer-director Cyril Schäublin takes audiences to a small watch-making town in 19th century Switzerland where the title refers to the tiny balance wheel meticulously added to each watch and the budding anarchist movement rising amongst the workers, most of whom are women. One of them, Josephine (Clara Gostynski) meets the real-life Russian anarchist Pyotr Kropotkin (Alexei Evstratov), but Schäublin’s focus is more expansive than their relationship. It’s historical and political, not about fiery rhetoric, but pointillist detail.
