For his follow-up to the award-winning animated feature Birdboy: The Forgotten Children, writer-director Alberto Vázquez kills a lot of bears in a number of creative ways. It’s war after all, and it has been waging for ages, as teddy bears face off against unicorns in the Magic Forest. Following the standard war film format, Vázquez takes bear brothers Bluey, a sadistic sort, and Tubby, a kind-hearted soul, through boot camp and into their first combat mission as the conflict between them grows. The horrors are unsparing, and that might be Vázquez’s point about war: nothing good comes of it.
