With its massive ensemble (Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie), its story-within-a-story structure, and its inimitable mise-en-scène, the latest from Wes Anderson is unmistakably a very Wes Anderson movie. Co-written with regular collaborator Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom), Asteroid City takes place in a fictional desert town in 1955 where a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention is interrupted by an alien visitation. The framing device of the story concerns the actors portraying the these events in a black and white teleplay. The film's recent premiere in Cannes resulted in a wide range of reactions, as did The French Dispatch in 2021. Luckily, audiences don’t have to wait long to decide for themselves if this is another beautiful bit of nothing from Anderson, one of his best, or somewhere in between.
