Manga artist Takehiko Inoue makes his directorial debut with this continuation of Slam Dunk, his manga about a basketball team at Shohoku High School. Published from 1990-1996, Slam Dunk has already been adapted into an anime series that ran between 1993 and 1996. For this feature film, Inoue shifts the focus to the speedy point guard Ryota Miyagi, whose older brother, Sota, inspired his love of basketball. Ryota and his teammates Hanamichi Sakuragi (the lead in the original series), Takenori Akagi, Hisashi Mitsui, and Kaede Rukawa face off against Sannoh Kogyo High School in the Inter-High School National Championship. The First Slam Dunk won Best Animation Film from the Japanese Academy, beating out One Piece Film: Red, Lonely Castle in the Mirror, Inu-oh, and Suzume while also becoming the fifth-highest-grossing anime film of all time.
