Savanah Leaf’s feature directorial debut follows 24-year-old Gia (Oakland rapper Tia Nomore), a Black single mother who is pregnant with her third child and struggling to regain custody of her first two children who are currently in foster care. Leaf, a former Olympic volleyball player, takes elements from The Heart Still Hums, the 2020 documentary short she directed with Bones and All star Taylor Russell, and adds elements from her own life to tell a moving and empathetic tale of a Black woman’s humanity in the face of a relentless and oppressive system.
