Writer-director Carolina Cavalli’s debut feature stars Benedetta Porcaroli (18 Presents) as Amanda, an indolent 24-year-old living in her wealthy family’s home after studying in Paris. With no job, no boyfriend (she intimidates them), and no friends, Amanda decides to befriend the daughter of her mother’s friend, Rebecca (Galatea Bellugi), a local girl she used to play with as a child. The fact that Rebecca is a shut-in who refuses to leave her room only increases Amanda’s determination to make the friendship work. With influences ranging from Wes Anderson to Yorgos Lanthimos to Paolo Sorrentino, Cavalli creates a surprising empathy for her oddball lead character.
