Which of These New Fall TV Shows Will Fail First?
We're going to go out on a limb and predict that not every new television series this season will be a success. While recent years have brought new ratings hits in the form of This Is Us, The Good Doctor, and Young Sheldon, there have also been plenty of failures. At some point in the coming months, one show will be the first to go.
Which newcomer will be the first cancellation victim of the 2018-19 season? In the gallery above, we discuss the outlook for each of the 18 first-year shows headed to the five broadcast networks this fall. Note that this year (unlike in past years) we don't have quotes from critics' first impressions of the new fall pilots, since several networks have issued new guidelines to reviewers prohibiting such early reviews over the summer. (But over the past week several reviewers have started posting their evaluations of all the new fall shows, so we have summarized those where applicable.)
Debuts October 25 on The CW.
The Cast: Danielle Rose Russell, Matthew Davis, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, Peyton Alex Smith, Aria Shahghasemi
The Premise: It's a spinoff from The Originals, which was a spinoff from The Vampire Diaries, which was an adaptation of a series of YA vampire novels.
The Outlook: Russell will be reprising her role as Hope Mikaelson from the final season of The Originals, with the new show following her and her supernatural classmates at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. The other familiar face is Davis, who has appeared in both of the prior series as Alaric Saltzman. Since there was no pilot shot, no one has seen an episode yet. But it likely doesn't matter what critics think of Legacies, since it will have a built-in audience of viewers who are sad that The Originals is over and will likely give the new series a chance—especially with Legacies inheriting its predecessor's Thursday night timeslot following Supernatural. Unless vampire fatigue sets in, this one should last at least to the end of the season.
