Every David Fincher Movie, Ranked
One of the most critically acclaimed film directors of the past three decades, David Fincher has made 11 features to date—each written by a different screenwriter. With his latest film, the Oscar hopeful Mank, soon to launch on Netflix, we are taking the opportunity to rank all of the director's films from worst to best according to their Metascores, which reflect the critical consensus for each film.
The second adaptation (but first in English) of Stieg Larsson's best-seller, Fincher's 2011 thriller stars Rooney Mara (reuniting with the director after the previous year's The Social Network) as hacker Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist as the pair investigate a 40-year-old missing persons case. While the 2009 Swedish adaptation by Niels Arden Oplev was immediately followed by two sequels (based on books two and three in Larsson's Millennium series), Fincher was unable to make a follow-up despite years of efforts (including multiple completed screenplays for the second film). Instead, a 2018 adaptation of the fourth book (written by David Lagercrantz) was directed by Fede Álvarez with an all-new cast.
“The film isn't quite as edgy as Fincher's best work - 'Seven,' 'Fight Club' and 'Zodiac' are masterpieces of modern angst. But the director brings a fresh eye to what might easily have been an unnecessary rehash of the 2009 Swedish adaptation.” —Calvin Wilson, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
