Every David Fincher Movie, Ranked
One of the most critically acclaimed film directors of the past three decades, David Fincher has made 11 features to date—each written by a different screenwriter. With his latest film, the Oscar hopeful Mank, soon to launch on Netflix, we are taking the opportunity to rank all of the director's films from worst to best according to their Metascores, which reflect the critical consensus for each film.
Arriving in 2007 after a five-year break for the director, Fincher's second serial killer thriller is quite unlike his first (Seven), though it does have some commonalities with his recent Netflix series Mindhunters. Like the latter, Zodiac is a period piece focusing more on procedure than violence or action, and it centers on the investigation into the still-unsolved "Zodiac Killer" murders that plagued the Bay Area in the 1960s and '70s. Many critics loved it—with much praise going to the director's eye for period detail—and Zodiac is often cited as one of Fincher's very best films, but it's also the lowest-grossing release of the director's career.
“Conveying an astonishing array of information across a long narrative arc while still maintaining dramatic rhythm and tension, this adaptation of Robert Graysmith's bestseller reps by far director David Fincher's most mature and accomplished work.” —Todd McCarthy, Variety
