Every David Fincher Movie, Ranked
One of the most critically acclaimed film directors of the past three decades, David Fincher has made 11 features to date—each written by a different screenwriter. With his latest film, the Oscar hopeful Mank, soon to launch on Netflix, we are taking the opportunity to rank all of the director's films from worst to best according to their Metascores, which reflect the critical consensus for each film.
Following an early career working for George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic and then a period directing commercials and music videos (including Madonna's "Express Yourself" and "Vogue"), Fincher made his feature directorial debut with this 1992 sequel to James Cameron's 1986 hit Aliens. Fincher was a last-minute replacement for Vincent Ward (whose name remains on the film as a writer), and was forced to start filming without a finished script. That was just one of the many problems with the production (mostly outside of Fincher's control), and the result, while not terrible (it looks great, unsurprisingly), is both the worst film of Fincher's career and the lowest-scoring entry in the Alien series.
Impressively, Fincher has received positive reviews for every single movie that followed his debut.
“Just at the point when Alien 3 should kick into high terror gear, it becomes clear that this hushed, somber sequel doesn't know how to deliver the goods. Fincher has style to spare -- and the sets, cinematography and special effects are all first rate -- but the nuts and bolts of storytelling elude him.” —David Ansen, Newsweek
